John Dykstra Battlestar Galactica Visual Effects Contract
Written by Marcel Damen

This is the official contract of John Dykstra and his visual effects team for Battlestar Galactica (at that time still called Starworld). The contract is co-signed by almost all the (now famous) members of the visual effects team, like Richard Edlund, Grant McCune, Donald Trumbull, Joe Johnston, Ralph Massey, Carlo Rambaldi (unsigned), etc. Also included is the addtional request for a change in the contract for John Dykstra to continue his work on the Battlestar Galactica televison series.

Interesting to note in this contract is the sub-contract for Carlo Rambaldi (wrongly spelled as Rimbaldi) in both English and Italian to do creature electronics on the eyes and mouth of the Imperious Leader. The contract refers to a meeting Carlo Rambaldi had with Glen Larson and John Dykstra for a project called Starworld. The contract isn't signed and the Imperious Leader didn't have moving eyes and mouth, so it's save to assume he never worked on the Imperious Leader head (see article: Who made the Imperious Leader?). Since the project was still called Starworld at the time and when I talked to him I asked if he ever worked on Battlestar Galactica, showing him images of the Imperious Leader mask (which was not made by him), it sadly didn't ring any bells. I did mention Glen Larson too, but the link with the wrong name and a creature he didn't make must have thrown him off.

For those who don't know Carlo Rambaldi and what the fuss is all about: only a few years later Carlo Rambaldi became very famous (and got an Oscar/Academy Award) for creating another alien for Steven Spielberg: E.T. - The Extra Terrestrial.
