GALACTICA.TV - SITE OBJECTIVE

How did we start, where did we come from?

Back in 1978, when we were still kids, on September 17 there was a three hour special broadcast of highly promoted, new, great scifi movie made for television, called Battlestar Galactica. It was love at first sight. The movie was quickly followed by a Battestar Galactica television series. After only one year the show was sadly cancelled leaving many fans in tears. This series made such an impact on us that even now, 30 years later, we're still fans of this show.

Wondering what had happened to our childhood heroes combined with the love for collecting autographs, started us on a search. We have been tracing Battlestar Galactica cast, guest stars and crew for years now, in an effort to get one single photo or trading card signed by them. We have already located over 150 living cast and crew from the original Battlestar Galactica series today. Some haven't been active as actors for decades or have always been a mystery for most fans ("What ever happened to ...?")! Check out: Marcel Damen's MyBattlestarGalactica.COM website or Mike Egnor's BattlestarGalacticaAutographs.COM website to find out who we've found so far.

Collecting autographs is fun. You get to write or meet with someone you saw on TV, and you get something in return to remember that moment. When actors pass away, their signature on a photo is often the last piece of evidence that, at one point they had this photo in their hands, and signed it to a fan (giving away a small piece of them).

The majority of the people weren't Battlestar Galactica main stars, and were thrilled that we contacted them about their work almost 30 years later. They would sometimes write things that they could remember from the Battlestar Galactica series that had happened to them. After awhile, we thought of combining this information and sharing it with the fans. Even the smallest Battlestar Galactica characters sometimes had great stories that no Battlestar Galactica fan had heard before.

In the fall of 2004, we decided to really do something with this and started contacting these Battlestar Galactica guest stars again, but now with a prepared interview by phone with the idea to publish this online. We only asked for 10 minutes of their time, but sometimes the scheduled 10 minute interviews easily became 45-60 minutes or even longer, because most of them really enjoyed talking to us. It always seemed to bring back pleasant memories of their past and part on the Battlestar Galactica series.

These Battlestar Galactica autograph collections (which can be viewed online on our personal websites) were also noticed by convention organizers, who asked us to participate in a European reunion of the original Battlestar Galactica series cast in 2005 in Birmingham (UK) and Utrecht (The Netherlands). What a blast! Some bonds were tightened and even led to making some of their official websites (like for Anne Lockhart and Terry Carter).

Great, but what about the NEW Battlestar Galactica series?

For the new Battlestar Galactica series, many of the actors visit conventions to promote it. The actor on TV becomes touchable and you can talk to him about what happened last week and hope they'll give you a glimpse of what will happen to their character in the future. Since we visited a lot of these conventions we caught up with these Battlestar Galactica actors who gave us similar nice stories and titbits about the new Battlestar Galactica series.

Having already done many interviews of the original Battlestar Galactica series cast and crew, we simply started on doing the same for the new Battlestar Galactica series as well. Aaron Douglas (Chief Tyrol) really enjoyed the questions and stayed on the phone for almost a full hour! Soon after, we met him again at a Battlestar Galactica convention in the UK, but this time he brought a couple of his Battlestar Galactica colleagues and the connection was made and some great interviews were taped.

You can tell a difference in the interviews between the original and new Battlestar Galactica series. People from the original Battlestar Galactica series view it as a stroll down memory lane. They look back at it with fondness. Unfortunately, since it's been almost 30 years later, they have forgotten some things as well. With the new Battlestar Galactica series, you get to talk to them as they're doing it and it's fresh in their minds. You can ask what is going to happen in future Battlestar Galactica episodes. But since they are caught up in it now, they haven't had time to reflect on what the Battlestar Galactica experience has meant for them.

What is this site not about?

We focus on the COMPLETE cast and crew of ALL Battlestar Galactica series. We are not trying to offer things that so many other Battlestar Galactica sites are already offering, like focusing on every small bit of minutia of the Battlestar Galactica story or delivering yet another fully documented Battlestar Galactica episode guide. There are some great Battlestar Galactica fan or official websites out there that do this, but it's not for us. We will have interviews with some Battlestar Galactica main cast as many others also do, it's not our prime focus. We're just as interested in the story of a minor guest star or a prop builder of any of the Battlestar Galactica series.

Why every person and not just the main cast?

We think this will give some unique insight and new stories from angles that you'd least expect it. Plus we feel that some of these people behind the camera deserve just as much credit as the 10 well-known faces in front of it! On all the Battlestar Galactica sites we visited ourselves, we never saw some of the stories we now know. You've probably read many, many interviews with Richard Hatch, Dirk Benedict, etc. about the original Battlestar Galactica series. And they are great! But what about the other people involved in the Battlestar Galactica show, who saw it from a different perspective?

Why not make three websites, one for each Battlestar Galactica series, since most fans of one show don't care about the other show any way?

First of all: because we DO like all Battlestar Galactica series of course. We are original Battlestar Galactica series fans, that dare to say we love the new Battlestar Galactica series as well. We are offering stories from the original Battlestar Galactica series, creating websites for the Battlestar Galactica actors, have helped to add these Battlestar Galactica actors in conventions, and will be offering exclusive interviews with them. However, the new series is out now and it bases the concept of Battlestar Galactica in modern times. Is it family TV? No, we wouldn't let our children watch it. But it has great acting, writing, and special effects.

On the other hand new Battlestar Galactica series fans need to see where this Battlestar Galactica series really originated from. It's not this cheesy old TV show that was broadcast before they were born and nobody cares about, it's TV history! It was the most expensive TV show ever with a line up of quality actors and guest stars, and included the highest quality of television special effects of it's time. The original Battlestar Galactica series still has a huge fan following almost 30 years after it was broadcast (and it ran just one season, 24 episodes)! Try to put yourself in THAT position, still cherishing something in 30 years, that you saw on TV now...

Besides, we're the webmasters so we get to decide what to write about, include on the website and what not. You won't find Caprica on this website since we feel it's too far detached from the story about a battlestar called Galactica

How's the website set up?

We offer a database of all the cast and crew of all the Battlestar Galactica series on our site. Some actors already have their name linked to a profile page on our website. This page will give information about the cast or crewmember and what he/she did on the Battlestar Galactica series. Further we present you new Battlestar Galactica interviews taken by our GALACTICA.TV team combined with some news and fan stories. They'll be presented in an online magazine which will be published every month. The back issues will be saved and made available so you can always flip back to see them again. All GALACTICA.TV interviews will be linked under a separate link as well as through a link on the actor's profile page.

Conclusion

It's really as the subtitle of the website states: the Battlestar Galactica site that focuses on the cast in front of and the crew behind the camera of all Battlestar Galactica series. There will be a new online magazine published every month (depending on the amount of time we have in making one) with new Battlestar Galactica interviews and some great Battlestar Galactica articles, so be sure to visit often to check out new things! Next to that we'll be filling in the profile page of every cast and crew member of any Battlestar Galactica series over time.

ENJOY!

Marcel Damen & Mike Egnor
